Riverina Electorate's Christmas Card Competition

The spirit of Christmas Card is a beloved tradition in the Riverina Electorate, and it comes alive each year through the artistic expressions of our community’s youngest members.

The Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, has been the driving force behind this pleasant tradition, and this year marked the tenth anniversary of his annual Christmas Card Design competition.

“Christmas in My Back Yard,” a topic that captured the heart of rural Australian Christmas, gathered young talent eager to express their ideas of the holiday season. The previous year’s competition had made headlines when the mesmerizing artwork of a “Christmas koala enjoying a day on the water” captured the hearts of those who saw it.

The previous year, the intriguing artwork of a “Christmas koala enjoying a day on the water” captivated the hearts of all who saw it.

The magic of this tournament, however, was not limited to the top slot. Liam Beal, an 8-year-old Year 2 pupil from Murrumburrah Public School, was the worthy runner-up. Meanwhile, Anna Gleeson, an 8-year-old Year 2 pupil from St Joseph’s School in Lockhart, took third place. Their work was also featured on Mr. McCormack’s Christmas card, which is distributed to community members and key political officials.

The creative imaginations of kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade youngsters throughout the Riverina and Central West produced almost 1,300 entries. It was an amazing response that demonstrates the energy and resiliency of the local communities who have recently had to deal with issues like floods, COVID-19, and drought.

“Considering these challenges, I was delighted to see so many entries submitted to my annual Christmas card drawing competition,” Mr. McCormack said, expressing his delight at the tremendous response. Though it was difficult for the judges to choose a winner from so many excellent drawings, Lyra’s surfing koala was recognized as the best entry in a competitive category.”

Previous year the competition  was opened on December 12, 2022, young artists submitted their creative takes on Christmas settings, and it received a wonderful reaction.

The competition this year will end on Friday 10 November 2023, so more up-and-coming artists will have the opportunity to enter and share their distinctive interpretations of “Christmas in My Back Yard.”

The three winning entries earned book prizes in addition to being featured on the Christmas card as a testament to their artistic abilities. A souvenir participation award was given to each kid who took the time to present their creative Christmas Card images.
